Rated 2 out of 5 by Better than nothing...just hardly Similar to other customers, my shoulder gaurd also ripped within a week or two. It has a hole on my horses whithers. The sizing is also SUPER odd. Looks absolutely nothing like the picture. I have a 15 hand quarter horse mare and I ordered a medium. Its loose and worthless at the bottom of it. She had no blanket sores, and then has now developed them on the front of her shoulder and even her leg where the gaurd has been rubbing awkardly. Granted, this is the first year she's been blanketed all winter. Maybe she's just blanket sore-prone. But the gaurd still should have helped. December 13, 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by good protect This Protect is very good it does its job but is not very sturdy. Mine ripped after only three days. My idea would be to get the material and make your own. my horse is so happy after get this. May 8, 2011
Rated 2 out of 5 by Sizing is weird Ordered a Medium for my 15h horse - looked ridiculous! The neck opening was really small (and yes, I opened the neck band) so it looked like he was wearing a turtleneck. It covered about half of his neck. But I'm not sure a Large would work better, as the rest of it seemed sized properly. (Just a tip: Got a Weatherbeeta one from a friend - size m - fits perfectly.) January 24, 2011
Rated 2 out of 5 by Doesn't fit My new blanket is rubbing my Appy/WB shoulders. Got a L based on the size reccomendations but it is WAY too small, wouldn't even fit down to the withers. Now I have to buy another one and wait for it too! January 22, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Wonderful Item My old mare requires blanketing now in the winter and her shoulders were getting rubbed raw by the heavy blanket. Bought one of these midway through last winter and before winter was out, the hair on her shoulders was growing back. Then this fall she cut her shoulder high up by the withers. Couldn't bandage it and couldn't suture it. And did I mention she loves to roll? The Shoulder Guard saved the day by keeping debris out of the wound while it heals. Just bought another one as the first is really starting to fall apart. It tears easily and is wearing thin, but well worth the money. November 17, 2010
Rated 5 out of 5 by AMAZING for blanket sores!! My horse had sores from her blanket and i was not going to buy another new blanket. So i bought the shoulder guard. WOW did it help! Although the hair did not grow back right away the sores healed and my horse was no longer irritated. IF YOUR HORSE HAS SORES BUY THIS. It is 100% worth your money(: I do not feel there are any flaws in this product! August 11, 2010

My horse is very hard to find a blanket that fits her without rubbing her withers. I'm hoping that this will help reduce her discomfort and protect coat.

What size horse is considered a medium? My horses wear between 72-74 blanket. Thanks
Hilarie on Feb 12, 2014
Best Answer: I think my mare wears a size 72 blanket. She's a 15.3HH, average built TB weighing about 1130 lbs. It fits just fine. There is velcro to adjust around the neck and it's adjustable under the belly. I really like this guard. It's protected her withers and shoulders from developing rub marks.

Is this product durable enough for itchy horses that tend to rub their neck areas on trees? If, not, any suggestions? Also, how do you install this item on the horse? Over the head and thru the front legs? Any straps underneath? Easy to take on and off? Not using blankets much in FL so blanket rubbing is not the real problem as we remove the blankets in the AM daily. Thanks!

Best Answer: I would not recommended for itchy horses. The material seems to rub through easily. You install them over the head and there is Velcro that attaches behind the front legs. I also find this easy to remove and put on. I use this on my horse under her winter blanket. Material is very thin and spandex material. There is also a velcro strap at the neck area you can tighten if needed. I hope this is helpful.

what size would fit a 1200 thoroughbred cross???
isabelle k on Oct 29, 2015
Best Answer: I bought one a couple of years ago for my elderly mare, size large. She is about 1100lbs and it is a bit large on her. Large should fit your horse fine. It does keep them from rubbing off their hair over the shoulder and adds an extra layer where it helps keep them warmer. I'm happy with mine.
