Horses Turned Outside without Shelter - Turnout Sheet and Blanket materials are waterproof and designed to keep your horse dry, however if your horse is turned out in a field without a run in shed or shelter during prolonged rain or heavy downpours your horse may still get wet especially in the neck and tail areas.
When using a blanket or sheet it is critical to monitor the fluctuating climate and temperatures even with a blanket that is waterproof and breathable. The wicking properties of a breathable blanket are designed to wick away normal body heat, when a blanket is too heavy the heat and moisture cannot be wicked away fast enough causing your horse to sweat. The temperature and the length of your horse’s coat will determine what weight of blanket you should use. For this reason, most people who choose to blanket horses have several articles of horse clothing that offer varying levels of warmth.
When selecting a blanket ensure to take into account your horse’s behavior, environment or other horses that may be turned out with your horse. The lower the denier number the less strength the material has. 420 Denier and 600 Denier are not recommended for horses that bite, chew or rub on blankets or for horses turned out with a companion or in a group. Always ensure your horse’s blanket is properly fitted and all straps are adjusted correctly, if a blanket is too tight or too loose, straps may break and material may tear. For younger horses or horses turned out with a companion or in groups, it is recommended to purchase 1200 Denier or 1680 Denier material as these are stronger materials and are less likely to tear. Certain types of fencing such as barbwire or foreign objects such as nails will easily tear any blanket no matter what the denier, always inspect the area in which your horse is kept to remove any nails or jagged fencing that may cause damage. There are no horse blankets that are guaranteed to not rip or tear.

Why did you choose this?
WHAT IS THE PROPER WAY TO MEASURE THE HORSE FOR SIZE...FIRST TIME HORSE OWNER AND BUYER.?
Best Answer: You want to measure from center of chest, just below the neck line, around the widest part of the horse to just under the tail.
does the neck wrap detach from the body blanket?
Best Answer: No, you cannot remove the neck wrap. I did not use the blanket yet.
I have trouble with my horse at the neckline. too much room. he has ruined three already by rolling and getting twisted. does this coat run large and is the hood detachable? thanks
Best Answer: Hi Barbara - If anything, this blanket runs on the small side. I would recommend going one size up if your horse is stout. I bought it for my saddlebred (long curvy neck, long body, tall but not a muscle guy) and it fits perfectly snug and does not shift or rub. The neck does NOT detach which is one of the main reasons that I bought it. My horses do not have a barn so their blankets are worn all winter once it gets really cold. The horse that wears this blanket likes to lounge around in the loose hay and snow when he gets in a sunny spot. He also rolls around all the time...down and roll on the left...get up and then straight back down to roll on the right. Mud, muck, snow, rain...this blanket worked so well with keeping him warm and dry even in the rain, no rips, tears, etc. It was a bargain at the $109 that I paid for it. I'm purchasing a second one for a new horse at our place this winter.
Hope this helps !
Best Answer: I love This blanket, it's easy to clean, just brush off the dry dirt. Kept my horse warm enough in our north west temps. My horse never grow out her winter coat, so she looked beautiful all winter long and kept her clean. It held up very well no rips or tears. I did give it a through cleaning this spring then re coated it with " Camp Dry" and aired it out. So it's ready for another wet cold winter. Yes it's water proof but since I scrub it down with soap and water I wanted to make sure it stayed water proof. Awesome blanket, good price. I like all Tough One products, very durable. Hope this helps your decide on this blanket.
what size do I need for a 14.2 hand horse?
Best Answer: With a measuring tape, measure your horse from the center of his chest ( front of horse) across to his butt. If he is a plump round horse add an a couple inches or if still growing. I would think he will meadure between a 66-68 depending on how long he is. There are lots of sites that show you where to measure. I hope this helped!
How cold is blanket protection good for?
Best Answer: Definitely depends on you're horse (body condition, coat length etc..) his living arrangements (turn out, stall etc). My older horse who lived outside with free choice hay was good in this blanket from 0-20 f. He had a trace clip but it was growing back in by the time it got really cold. I was able to use a blanket liner with this blanket on days it was below 0.
It is a really nice blanket for the price! I
How are you waterproofing this blanket after washing?
Best Answer: I am lucky to have have my blankets laundered and waterproofed once a year by a nearby professional horse blanket cleaning service. It's hard to get good results waterproofing them yourself. You can buy fabric waterproofing products and try. It's lots of work and I haven't had much success with it.
