Tough-1 Snuggit Blanket Specifications:
  •     Measuring Instructions - Stand your horse as square as possible, measure from the center of chest around side of the body to the point of the horse's rump just before the tail. If you horse ends up measuring between sizes always round up to the next size to ensure full coverage.
  •     Washing Instructions - Machine wash with cold water – Gentle cycle with mild detergent. Air Dry or Machine Dry/No Heat
  •     Horses Turned Outside without Shelter - Turnout Sheet and Blanket materials are waterproof and designed to keep your horse dry, however if your horse is turned out in a field without a run in shed or shelter during prolonged rain or heavy downpours your horse may still get wet especially in the neck and tail areas.
When using a blanket or sheet it is critical to monitor the fluctuating climate and temperatures even with a blanket that is waterproof and breathable. The wicking properties of a breathable blanket are designed to wick away normal body heat, when a blanket is too heavy the heat and moisture cannot be wicked away fast enough causing your horse to sweat. The temperature and the length of your horse’s coat will determine what weight of blanket you should use. For this reason, most people who choose to blanket horses have several articles of horse clothing that offer varying levels of warmth.

When selecting a blanket ensure to take into account your horse’s behavior, environment or other horses that may be turned out with your horse. The lower the denier number the less strength the material has. 420 Denier and 600 Denier are not recommended for horses that bite, chew or rub on blankets or for horses turned out with a companion or in a group.
Always ensure your horse’s blanket is properly fitted and all straps are adjusted correctly, if a blanket is too tight or too loose, straps may break and material may tear.  For younger horses or horses turned out with a companion or in groups, it is recommended to purchase 1200 Denier or 1680 Denier material as these are stronger materials and are less likely to tear.
Certain types of fencing such as barbwire or foreign objects such as nails will easily tear any blanket no matter what the denier, always inspect the area in which your horse is kept to remove any nails or jagged fencing that may cause damage. There are no horse blankets that are guaranteed to not rip or tear.

I love the adjustable shoulders. This blanket fits beautifully and the quality is great for the price.

Sometimes it gets and stays cold here in Virginia. This is for an older rescue mare, who needs some additional warmth because of her age and weight.

what temperature is good for the 300g fill?
A shopper on Dec 1, 2014
Best Answer: I only blanket when temps drop below 20 or when it is wet and windy. This blanket keeps my horse nice and toasty. I do check by putting my hands under the blankets to feel if they are warm. When it drops below 5 I do use a fleece liner too. I am amazed how dry and warm the horse remain in rain and snow storms with these blankets, though sometimes the rain does leak down their necks. The blanket has held up well even with the filly that destroys everything (2 seasons so far).Therewas a little tear on the seam between the black and the colored part but I repaired that. I have replaced the back leg straps at the beginning of this season (starting 3).

measuring for blankets?
A shopper on Nov 17, 2014
Best Answer: Measure from the center of chest to the end of hindquarter (NOT around the inside of cheak). This is the length the blanket will cover. If your horse is between sizes, buy the next size up.

We have had these blankets on 2 horses all winter. The blankets are new this year. Would it be necessary to launder them after one year? They are quite clean on the outside and just a bit chalky looking on the inside. Does laundering reduce their water repellancy and reduce the warmth? If I should launder them, what detergent would you recommend that would not bother the horses next winter? Thanks. Paul
Paul P on Apr 9, 2014
Best Answer: Laundering has not affected the warmth or water repellency of this blanket. My horse is an expert at rolling in the mud and I have had it cleaned several times at a professional cleaner - I don't have a washing machine big enough for an 81" blanket. I have never had a problem with a detergent irritating a horse - I think the key is to make sure the blanket is rinsed really well, which can be a problem in a residential-size washer.
I always like to start out the season with clean blankets, but if yours aren't dirty or smelly I don't see why you should have to launder them this year. Hope this helps.

Are the buckles in the 300 gram clips or actual buckles ?
A shopper on Jan 5, 2015
Best Answer: on all of the Tough-1 blankets I have there are no buckles, just snaps and T's for surcingles . The snaps on chest have broken and I've had to replace them with brass snaps . Some of the snaps on back leg straps have lost their spring closure. I've had to replace them as well. Having said that, that seems to be the way hardware goes on all blankets I've purchased ( and in my 55 years of training, that's a lot of blankets)
The Tough-1 for me, is a fantastic blanket that fits well and wears the best out of all that I've owned.
Hope this helps. I'm still a faithful customer when i need a blanket

Does this blanket hold up well in trees, with wire fencing and the rough outdoors?
Abbie Soliday on Jan 2, 2014
Best Answer: Actually haven't used it yet because my old blanket has held up longer than I thought it would but appears well made! I have a double layered Tough-1 sheet that I use in the early spring and it has held up to multiple pasture turn outs, colt rompings, and washings... very pleased with it. It has no rips and hasn't come off even with my other horses biting, rolling and playing trying to get it off! My pasture has smooth wire and no trees but they do rub on my arena with rough cut plank fencing and no rips! Hope that helps!

Does this fit narrow chested horses?
A shopper on Oct 28, 2015
Best Answer: Since I have wide chested quarter horses, I can't specifically answer that question. I can however, validate that there is sufficient adjustment to pull the blanket snuggly around the neck. Because this blanket comes up on the neck a bit, it should work for the more narrow chested horse as long as the length is correct.

I have a mare who is 15.3 She normally wears a blanket size 82 will a 81 fit her? As I see you don't offer a size 82.
Christine s on Oct 19, 2014
Best Answer: I would think the 81 would work. There are no seams so it should not be restrictions it is nicely rounded I have the 84 but my horse is 16 2 and very stocky built and it fits him fine it is an awsome blanket. The adjustable neck is great so it fits great when it rains i don't have the leaky area on neck

lighter weight in this style?
A shopper on Dec 4, 2014
Best Answer: There is a 150 gram mid/lightweight version of this blanket that is nice. The chest closures are buckles instead of snaps/hooks which I don't like as well, but they work fine. The outer fabric is a lower denier--420 as compared to the 1200 D on the heavier blanket. My 420 D have not held up as well as those with the higher D outer fabric, but they are as nice in every other way.

Hi everyone- I know it says waterproof, but a few posters have stated that it was NOT. We don't have snow, but a lot of rain. Has your personal experience proved it to be waterproof? Thank you!
Kasey L on Dec 13, 2015
Best Answer: i have several of this blanket. The only area that gets wet in rain is where it runs down the neck but otherwise their bodies are dry. I don't think it's intended to be in rain without shelter. Mine can stay out or come in. These turnouts are super durable and way worth the money. If yours are out 24/7 I think sooner or later they would get wet, but for a horse turned out during the day and in at night it's great.

Have a size 72 blanket for my horse right now (that fits good that is saxon) but need replace. How are the sizes for these blankets? Do they run small or would I be okay ordering a 72 again
A shopper on Oct 29, 2015
Best Answer: I bought two and they fit true to size. They do not run small . I just followed the fitting instructions and had no difficulties. Great blanket, easy to put on and take off, and does it's job well.

We think that a 70" blanket would fit my horse but the sizes run 69" or 72" for the closest sizes. Which one should I try first?
Stacie C on Oct 4, 2015
Best Answer: Measuring Instructions - Stand your horse as square as possible, measure from the center of chest around side of the body to the point of the horse's rump just before the tail. If you horse ends up measuring between sizes always round up to the next size to ensure full coverage.

if the horse measures 68 what size would u buy?
A shopper on Jan 14, 2015
Best Answer: Generally you should go with the size closest to your measurement, which in this case would be a 69.
Stand your horse as square as possible. Measure from the center of the chest around the side of the body to the point of the horse's rump just before the tail. For this blanket, that is right about at the line where the two colors meet. If your horse ends up measuring between sizes, choose the one closest to your measurement unless your horse is particularly big-bodied.
Measuring is usually best done with a helper and a soft or cloth measuring tape. Take the measurement twice to be sure.

What blanket for horse with high withers?
A shopper on Jan 22, 2016
Best Answer: Neither of my horses has particularly high withers, but this blanket is pretty adjustable, so imagine it could work for your horse. Unless you get any better feedback from someone whose horse has high withers, I'd say give this a try and odds are good it will work.
