All horses carry parasites, but proper management will control them. Establishing good sanitation practices and maintaining a regular deworming schedule are a crucial to maintaining the good health of your horse. Not doing so can be dangerous, and can even cause death.
Controlling the growth of parasites depends on three factors: accurate identification, immediate treatment and effective prevention. Know the type of parasites that inhabit your horse by administering a fecal egg per gram test at least once each year. Use a paste dewormer at the beginning of the grazing season and throughout the year, as test results deem necessary. Minimize your horse’s risk of reinfestation with adequate stabling and upkeep of its environment.
Always dose according to your horse’s weight, not size. Appropriate rotation of ingredients (not products) is crucial. Avoid overlap of active ingredients every time you worm to ensure your horse receives the necessary combination of medicines to stay healthy.
