Product Summary:

Best Friend® Deluxe Grazing Muzzle

Best Friend® Deluxe Grazing Muzzles are recommended by equine health professionals to prevent as well as treat laminitis, founder, obesity, colic, and other diet-related diseases. The small opening in the bottom allows horses a limited amount of grass, yet unlimited water. Rather than being restricted to a non-grass environment to control intake, horses are free to exercise and socialize as part of the herd. A combination grazing muzzle and breakaway halter all in one, the design utilizes plastic side-release buckles as its breakaway feature. Each Deluxe muzzle comes with a spare buckle that can be easily attached in the field.

To use, adjust the muzzle to the horse using the same principles as the fit of a comfortable halter. Leave approximately one inch between the horse's mouth and the inside of the muzzle. The muzzle has a roomy fit to allow for chewing. You should be able to fit two to three fingers sideways between your horse's face and the muzzle. It's so easy to use, and costs less than purchasing a separate breakaway halter. The rubber bottom in the grazing muzzle is approximately ¼-inch thick.

Product Benefits:

  • Horse is happier as a result of not being kept away from both grass and outdoor buddies
  • Horse can get the required exercise (the average horse covers one mile per hour while grazing)
  • Disease prevention is easier and less expensive than a visit by the vet
  • All synthetic materials make it lightweight, rot-resistant, and well ventilated
  • Padded noseband helps resist rubbing and chafing
  • Durable, comfortable, and safe
  • Recommended by John Lyon’s Perfect Horse and The Horse Journal
  • Reduces bedding bill and stall-cleaning time
  • Peace of mind knowing your horse is happier and healthier

I have horses who are easy keepers and they have to wear grazing muzzles every summer. The Best Friend Grazing Muzzles are the only ones I have found that last all summer. I have tried many other cheaper brands and they usually fall apart within a week or two at most.

I have Morgan horses that will get fat on air. I live in FL so we have green grass almost year round so my horses wear these all year long when they're outside. The muzzle allows the horses social and outside time while not allowing them to eat too much grass

I have used this muzzle in the past and it works well. I am not worried about leaving it on the horse for extended periods of time.
Lynne E on May 13, 2018
This muzzle is very well made and extremely comfortable. It also has a safety release in case the halter gets caught on something. My mare has been using this muzzle for over 10 years.

For my bored four-year-old mare to keep her from eating all the bark off every tree in the pasture and chewing extension cords in half in the barn!

Have used this brand of grazing halter for four years. Broke a snap on current one which cannot be replaced without taking to a saddle repair shop...unfortunate because rest of halter is fine. Buy new one every year because feeding hole gets stretched.

Great design with good ventilation. Holds up well to daily use during the season. Fits my horse perfectly. I am very pleased with this product!

I have a mule that is prone to grass founder. Decided to try a muzzle instead of keeping him up in the barn lot.

Don't even bother with off brand muzzles if you have a determined pony like we do! She destroys them all but this one takes her the longest and is the kindest to her skin.
Barb C. on Jul 13, 2014
I chose the Best Friend grazing muzzle to help keep my overweight horse from getting fatter. It works very well. It is higher quality than some other brands that I looked at. The price was good.
Susan B on Jun 20, 2014
Need a grazing muzzle. This looks like good quality, and State Line Tack had the best price due to sale price.
Janice E on Jun 5, 2014
It works to restrict my horses' intake of grass and prevent colic. For the last 10+ years my EMS mare wears her grazing muzzle 24/7 from the first blades of grass sprouting in the spring until the grass turns brown in the fall. It's her life saver and she has the freedom to roam 15 acres of rich grass.
Dorothy C on May 21, 2014
Had an IR mare who needed restricted grazing. Worked great.
Leslie W on May 21, 2014
We purchased a 16 year old APHA gelding that had founder just one time in his past. Not knowing the horse well, we will use the grazing muzzle to ween him back onto pasture this spring.
James M on May 20, 2014
This is a very good value rather than paying for a breakaway halter and grazing muzzle separately. My horse got her other muzzle caught on a gate and pulled it completely off its hinges and dragged it around in a panic until it finally came loose. I'll never use a muzzle again without a breakaway halter.
Sandra B on May 8, 2014
i have a horse who just looks at food and gains weight. she does not like being on dry lot by herself, will rub her mane and tail off so for the last 4 years i keep her in a grazing muzzle during the spring and summer. i have to replace the deluxe grazing muzzle each year because by the end of the year the hole in the bottom has enlarged so much. she is very efficient in grazing with her muzzle. would recommend this product
Kathy B on May 8, 2014
I have a fat horse and you had the best price.
Callie F on May 2, 2014
This is the second one i have bought. The first one lasted several years. It stays on really well. It has come off a few times, but only 2-3 times per year. I did cut breathing holes in it for when it is hot weather, and added neon duct tape all over it so I could find it easily in the long grass and woods when it does come off.
Lori P on Apr 29, 2014

What size is the hole that restricts their grass consumption? It looks almost twice as large as the regular Tough 1 or Best Friend grazing muzzles. Can you provide the hole size for these muzzles? Need maximum grass restriction but like the easy breathe feature.

Tough-1 Delux Easy Breathe V Grazing Muzzle
Tough-1 Delux Easy Breathe V Grazing Muzzle
Tough-1 Poly/Nylon Grazing Muzzle
Tough-1 Poly/Nylon Grazing Muzzle
BEST ANSWER: The Easy Breathe muzzle has a vertical rectangular hole approximately 2" long and 1.25" wide. The other two have circular holes approximately 1.25" in diameter.
I personally much prefer the Easy Breathe. Since the hole is vertical and the horse's lips are horizontal, it really restricts intake, plus the nostril cut-outs not only allow the horse to breathe better, but (I feel) encourage them to keep drinking, which I have found to be a problem with the more closed-in muzzles.
Would the large size fit a quarter horse? Or is it for draft size?
A shopper on May 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We use this grazing halter for my Paso Fino with much success. Within 10 minutes of first fitting him with it he "caught on" to how to munch grass through it. We adjusted it tighter to allow an even better fit. With Quarter Horses being boarded with him & having only a slightly larger head I feel certain the "large" would fit well for that breed as well. Buckles allow adjustments.
How do I know what size to choose? I have 16-2 Appy with EMS. Horse or Large Horse?
Linda H on Feb 18, 2014
BEST ANSWER: First I ordered a large horse and thought it was too big so I ordered a horse--and this rubbed on him. So I switched back to the large horse. It seems too loose but too loose is better than a bit tight. He is 16.3.
any idea what size to use on a haflinger?

24" circumference x 7" depth

Horse
Average Size horses, such as Quarter Horses, 800-1100 lbs, 15-16 hands

can it be used for eating hay?
Linda R on Dec 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Hi Linda

Grazing muzzels are not intended for use with hay. My standardbred mare used it only when out to pasture - mainly when the pasture was rich during spring and early summer and again when fall came around (starch level in the grass would be higher in preparation for winter). Starch levels in hay are lower than grass.
Can you leave it on all night at pasture?
A shopper on Oct 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I leave it on my fat pony for 10 hours at a time every 2nd day. I see very slight rubbing at her muzzle area where the cup edge touches her. The rubbing marks disappeared after a few hours of having the cup off. I don't see any other bad effects, she readily accepts the muzzle. I estimate that she eats about 40% less when she wears it.
Have had my Best Friends grazing muzzle on my 20 year old Peruvian paso for 4 days, about 4 hours at a time...seems to fit well (very adjustable)..but he just stands in pasture and looks miserable...Any suggestions? Am I expecting too much too soon?
mary m on Apr 27, 2014
BEST ANSWER: My 20 and 9 year old QH mares wear this muzzle. My 9 year old threw a fit and wouldn't even try to eat for the first turnout. The next day I decided she had to get over it so I grabbed grass and put it through the hole a few times. An hour later she was trying to eat. If you give them the option to wait and eat freely in a few hours they'll wait. I would leave it on him longer and show him how it works. Good luck and I hope this helps!
can a horse drink from a water trough with this on?
A shopper on Jul 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Absolutely, just fine. They even think they're grazing even though the most they can get are maybe a few blades. My mare wears it willingly and it prevents her from eating too much green grass. It has been a life-saver literally for her. I've put sheepskin attachments on the side pieces to make it more comfortable. Highly recommended for the over-eater or the insulin-sensitive horses.
Will the cob size be too big for a 32 inch mini?
A shopper on Aug 25, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I suggest measuring the circumference of the muzzle and that of the mini's nose and compare. I needed a larger size for my 13.2 Welsh pony. It rubbed him a bit because of the way he would push it to the side to reach some grass.
Will this fit a draft horse?
A shopper on Nov 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I originally ordered the medium size and it was much to large for my 1000 lb. 15.1 hand horse and exchanged it for a small which is still somewhat large for him so I would expect the large size would almost definitely fit a draft horse
does it have a break away?
A shopper on Apr 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes it does and you should purchase the replacement buckles since local stores don't have the same style.
Need mini horse muzzle do you have a bet friend brand for mini?
A shopper on Apr 24, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I feel that best friend deluxe grazing muzzle is the best, I have used them for years, use moleskin all around the rim , it keeps the muzzle from rubbing. I buy it at any drug store in a little package of 3 strips about 3” by 5” and cut it lengthwise, folding the main part inside, and replace as necessary. I hope this helps , other muzzles don’t have the quality that these do. I hope this helps.
Is the halter leather?
Stephanie T on Mar 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No. It is a very sturdy web or woven strap. Not sure if it's cotton or nylon, but it is much better than leather. More durable.
Does it have a D ring?
Jennifer N on Aug 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I'm so sorry it's taken me this long to answer. Not sure I even saw the product, I might have sent it directly to my trainer. So I asked her today, she replies NO it does not have a D ring. JBH
My horse breaks the hole in the bottom of the muzzle and makes it bigger, is there any way I can fix it?
A shopper on Jul 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: you can try attaching leather to the outside or inside, and making a hole in the leather the same size as the one in the muzzle. I just buy a new one every year as one of mine wears it through, making the hole bigger. It is difficult to get any glue to adhere to the material on the muzzle,
do you sell the Cob size?

Will this protect from sunburn as well? My GRP has a pink nose and needs a sun shade, but putting that on over a muzzle seems like it will be too bulky
Shira R on Apr 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The muzzle itself will cover to above the tops of the nostrils. My pink nosed horses have never had sunburn issues on their noses while wearing these grazing muzzles. I do put fly masks on them during the worst insect months and it looks a little bulky but they seem to handle it just fine.
How do you decide which size to order?
Lynn B on Mar 31, 2018
