This is in a large claw foot bathtub outside with a wooden lid. The water runs into the tub 24-7 and used to freeze leaving me with little water to take and fill pails with. Now it is thawed and I fill 5 stalls with two 5 gal buckets each and my electric has hardly jumped! Great!
works great
This de-icer (250 watt) works great. I use a 16 gallon water tub and this keeps it from freezing. Here in AZ, we don't usually get frigid temps - only in the 20's, but a few nights in the teens - and this has worked great. Our days do warm up so ice melts during the day most of the time, so I haven't experienced constantly frigid temps. However, it can get cold at night I am very pleased. It turns on when needed, and doesn't warm up when not needed. I immediately removed the floater and it sinks to the bottom where my horse can't reach it. Fortunately, she doesn't play with the cord so all is well for her. I couldn't be happier knowing she's safe and getting the water she needs. Durability: 5
TERRIFIC HEATER
I waited to review this heater because I'd read other's reviews and, while mostly positive, two people said the heater didn't last. I had no such problems! I bought four of them, used them according to instructions, and was absolutely pleased with how well they worked. They kept the water in my horses' pails at a steady temperature - around 40 degrees - even through the coldest part of winter (12 degrees) here in North Carolina. The heaters are about 2" high but, except for the very bottom of the pail, didn't interfere with their access to the water. The price was reasonable and I would definitely buy these heaters again. Durability: 5
All the features on this product are true statements and works great.
We have had the coldest winter here in Saranac Lake, New York in the Adirondack Mountains since we don't remember when and were mighty sick of dealing w/frozen water buckets in our horses stalls. We purchased this product (3# for our indoor buckets and they have been a great asset to us and the horses.(Although there is always one horse that will mess with the cord coming out of bucket -- ya, we got one in the barn but we figured out how to fix her:)I would highly recommend these to all for their indoor water buckets for barns, dogs, cows etc. Durability: 5
nice looking product hoping for a couple of seasons
product seems to be good haven't had long enough to say much about durability, but hope it last for a couple of seasons Durability: 4
It works
It's a pail heater which I bought to replace a 50watt aquarium heater that I burned up when I let the water level fall too low and a replacement 50watt aquarium heater that really didn't do the job. This one, so far, has worked quite well and most importantly, it keeps the nipple waterers working. Durability: 5
Works well so far
I have this in a 2 gallon bucket for my chickens. I have nipple waterers and the heater seems to work great so far. Haven't had real cold weather yet but am sure it will do what it is supposed to. Can't comment on the durability being I have only had it a couple of months and haven't used it but a few times so far. Price at state line tack is best I have found. Buy with confidence.
Good Pail Heater
So far, so good. No complaints from my barn manager or my horse. We have had temperatures in the single digits and no problems. Also, the cord is well protected and long enough to reach the outlet without resorting to an extension cord. Durability: 5
Works great in the chicken coop
I use 5 gallon buckets with water bipples to hydrate the chickens. This bucket heater has made these very functional for our cold Spokane winter Durability: 5
Works well
Only complaint is the protection of the cord would be improved with metal instead of plastic. Our dog chewed right through the cord Durability: 3
Works great!
We have this heater in our chicken water, 5 gal bucket with watering nipples. We're in OK so our weather is all over the place. It's great to just plug it in & leave it, regardless of the weather, so we don't have to worry about unplugging/plugging it back in as the temp changes. Durability: 5

will this fit in a flat sided 6 gallon pail?

BEST ANSWER: Yes, I used it in a 5 gallon pail. My dogs pulled it out, however & chewed it to pieces very shortly after I got it. I use the Nelson Blue Devil bucket heaters. While a bit pricey, they work the best for me and are safer for dogs.

I am not sure. I have it in a 20 gallon round rubber tub and it works well. It is about 9" in diameter and would work in a 6 gallon round bucket. JD
It would fit in a 5 gallon bucket and sit on the bottom. We use it in a 20 gal tub and it works good in there.
I'm not sure what a flat sided bucket is. I works very well in our 5 gal buckets

Does it sit on the bottom of the bucket. Does it sink or float?
BEST ANSWER: This is designed to sit in the bottom, and usually does (95% ofthe time)but it may float up if the electrical cord twists too many times. A plastic clip is Included to help with this, but I've found that a small piece of duct tape works much better.

This heater sits on the bottom of the bucket and comes with a guard that safely keeps the cord in place and from being exposed at the top of the bucket. I use one in a 40 gallon trough as well. Works perfectly.
It sit's on bottom of the bucket it does not float.

does it cut off if the water gets low?

BEST ANSWER: We are using ours for a third season now. If you don't put it in a bucket where the water can be drawn down from beside the unit, you should not have a problem. The safety cage will then keep an animal from drawing it below the heating element. Since it is not a "heater," but a de-icer, you shouldn't have problem since when the thermostat senses a few degrees above freezing, it's turns the element off. Wish I could be more concrete, but we haven't had a single issue with ours and it works great for the barn cats. Remember that it's a pail de-icer and not a water trough "heater." Hope this helps.

I don't know. We have several and they work great in our automatically refilling outdoor waterers. But their protective cage would keep them from harming anything if the water was gone. It might stay on and just use electricity. They aren't advertised as having an automatic shut off so I wouldn't count on it.
No - you need to make sure you keep water in it - but we ended up getting larger buckets than needed and it works well - these heaters have been a life saver! I would recommend them - just get a larger bucket! Hope this helps
No unfortunately they don't turn off if waterm gets to low .... suggest use in metal troughs as if water runs out they will melt plastic
No but the plastic housing keeps it from burning bucket
Not that i know. We are very satisfied with it

Would this heat a 400 g stocktank?
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: We use it to deice our 100gal trough. It works well and it does not allow any ice to form. Having said that, I do t believe the unit has enough heat for a 400 gal container.

I have no idea. I use it on a rather small automatic waterere in the pasture that is probably less that 30 gallons total. Nice heaters, we have two of them now.
This one is 250 watts and easily heats 100 gallons. There are 500 and 750 watts. I think a 500 watt would be minimum. Jayme
No, it is not designed for that kind of capacity. It is a deicer for a "bucket" of water, not a stock tank.

Would this work in a small resin fountain?
BEST ANSWER: I took the floater part off of it so it would sink to the bottom and used it in a 5 gallon bucket with chicken founts on the bottom...it has worked great for me...it has been perfect in my chicken coop...never had anything happen to the bucket...I think it would work well for you...but you may want it ti float...it depends on what you want...hope this has helped you... Sincerely, PJ Miller

Not sure what you mean by small but, this heater is fairly large and would be too tall, for example, a standard bird bath. It's about 5 or so inches tall. I think if your small resin fountain is at least 7 or 8 inches deep it might be fine. I use mine in a 40 gallon trough and it works great.
I would sure think so. I put mine in a plastic 5 gallon bucket (like what you'd get at a hardware store) with watering nipples (or whatever they're called) for my chickens in the winter and it works excellent. Very good, worthwhile product.
We just have a small fountain, would libe to leave it out all winter for the birds and squirrels. The water is in a well at the bottome and up to a holding place and then falls in a stream down to anotger holding space. Water runs all tge time. Just dont want it to freeze up.
I don't know why it wouldn't work, unless it don't fit in the fountain.
