I need to protect an area (garden/bee yard) from rabbits, ground hogs, deer and bears. The bears are the reason for the 12 versus the 6 volt unit.

How is it mounted?
A shopper on Sep 29, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Secure either two heavy screws or nails spaced correctly into a sturdy wooden post, spacing the screws or nails the same distance apart as the holes on the back of the unit. The unit is heavy enough to hang in place without coming off the mounting. It's an excellent hot wire fence unit.
is this a good fence charger to keep horses and cows in? have about 10 acres to fence in. in a remote area.
darren p on Feb 21, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I am not use was on a much smaller area. Seemed to work great for me.
Can you hook this up to wire fence?
Melissa B on Sep 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You can if it is properly insulated on the post, but I would not recommend hooking it up to barb wire because an animal could get tangled up in it and cause serious injury to the animal. Granted the shock is not as strong as the ones that run on electricity. Also I would not recommend mesh fencing. This charger does put out a pretty good jolt and I know for a fact my horse respects it.
If battery dies, can you replace?
Joan W on Feb 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Batteries are easily replaceable. I'm on my second mag 12. And they last for many years. My first unit was in continuos use for 15 years
How many feet of wire can each 1 control?
A shopper on May 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It should say how many miles that the charger can charge. I have a seven acre pasture with steel wire and it about knocks your eyeballs out. I stay away from polywire because it just doesn't conduct like the plain steel wire does. If it says that it's a twelve mile fence charger, then I would trust that it charges twelve miles of steel wire without any opens in the system. Of course, if the ground is moist, it charges even better. This is a damn good charger and the only one I recommend to people. Stay away from those weenie chargers they sell at places like Murdoch's. The brands include Gallagher and Zareba. They're crap. The only thing I wish this charger had is a red indicator light to tell you that the charger is on or off from a distance. Trust the needle. It should be all the way to the far right if everything is working correct. Good luck.
How will this charger do with 1 1/2" tape fencing? For approx. 3000 feet.
Jennifer W on May 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi Jennifer,
I believe you will do just fine with this fencer. I have used numerous wires for fencing including the fence taping with my Parmak M magnum 12 solar fencer covering a lot more than 3,000'. Presently this fencer is used for approximately 2 acres of property using high tensile wire with 3 strands throughout.
Can this unit be used to power a fence and lights in a barn?
Dennis C on Oct 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Works great on short runs of fences, have about 12 of these units. This is designed for D. C. use. The bulbs would have to be for D. C. not A.C. There may be a way to adapt this, but I believe it would be very difficult and costly. There are many products available to power the A.C.
Can this fence charger be used with electric netting or polyrope?
Josie on Feb 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: This charger has never worked properly. i have sent it back 3 times.Still does not work. Stateline tack will not replace it. Pricey for nothing in return. I have 3 others that all work well. But after this I will purchase no more. I use them with the poly rope. Sherry @Gibb Ranch
Can you replace solar panel on the mag 12 ?
dave K on Jun 24, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Short answer, Maybe, if. The solar panel is permanently attached to the housing top (rivets I believe) which is a tight friction fit onto the top of the housing. So buying a new solar panel/top from Parmak would make it simple. Only two wires to attach inside the housing. With some basic sheet-metal skills, a new solar panel could be mounted on the existing housing top and the two wires run through the existing hole in the housing top to connect inside. Of course, the new solar panel must be the right voltage and current output, and not physically too big to withstand wind loading. Or you could mount a new solar panel separately, but close and wire it in place of the original one. Again the voltage and current output must be correct. I don't remember where the voltage regulator/charger is mounted (inside the solar panel, or inside the housing along with the battery). DO NOT connect the output of a solar panel directly to the battery. You MUST connect the output of the solar panel to the input of a voltage regulator/charger designed for the type battery you are using. Parmak has all that figured out. Don't change anything unless you know what you are doing.
How many ground rods needed?
A shopper on May 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I place a ground rod where I hang the charger. I attach the ground from the charger and a ground to the second wire of my fence. When I come to the end of the fence run I put in another ground and attach it to the second wire. I build my main fence with 4 strands of hi tensile wire from the bottom going up the first wire is hot the second is ground and the third is hot, at times I will make the forth wire hot depending on the cattle. If horses the forth will always be hot. When I run a temporary fence I run one wire hot and use the ground from the other fence. If I am only running one strand from a single charger i will put at least 3 ground rods placed over at least 30 feet.
Can this be charged with a battery charger?
JoEllyn A on Feb 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, but do not exceed the voltage and use low amp. Should not have to use a battery charger, these batteries have a life, and need to replace them if not charging with the solar panel.
Can 2 runs of tape connect to this charger? I need to make an L shape fence ( connecting to an L shaped wood fence)...would feel better with 2 rows.
A shopper on Feb 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I use these with horses. 3 runs of tape. about a mile in total length. works okay. 120 volt units are still the best for me. However, these solar units work okay in the back fields
Can it be used for temporary lighting with 12 volt bulbs?
Dennis C on Oct 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It's an electric fence box. I have never even thought about using it for any kind of lighting.
Hello , can you get an adapter for this model to also opperate by a.c. ?...also , how long will the charger store power ? How long will it store power without sunlit , or low light / cloudy days ? Thank-you.
A shopper on May 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I would contact the manufacturer about the use of of an AC adapter. The 6 volt charger states it is good for 3 weeks without sunlight. I did not see the same claim for the 12 volt although I suspect it will be similar. I have been using the 12 volt at an apiary for 2 years and I never see a drop on the gauge unless there is a short and the charger quickly rebounds when the short is fixed. Night or day even after multiple days of winter clouds the charger keeps providing energy.
can we get a replacement switch?
Daina F on Nov 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, if your switch has been damaged or no longer works you can find a replacement. You can do a Google search for a repairman to replace it or, purchase a new switch and DIY. If you DIY make sure you do it correct.

Ag Teacher Don on Dec 10, 2017

I hope this helps, this is how it is listed in catalog.
How many watts is the solar panel?
A shopper on May 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't know but it's been cloudy and rainy for the last several months. The charger has been "on" the whole time and never showed any decline in power to the fence. Whatever wattage it is seems to be sufficient.
Is there a way to install a timer on the Parmak magnum 12 solar unit?
