Looking for more coverage for my mare's hypersensitivity to bug bites

I think it will be easier to put on my horse than the sheets I have now.
Diane A on Jun 19, 2018
need to cover all of neck. Most fly sheets don't cover most of neck when grazing

well made. Great reviews from others.

Excellent coverage and protection for horse in pasture turnout who is sensitive to mosquitoes and other night time flies.

It is thicker than our others and does not rip as easily
Karen J on Sep 18, 2017
My horse is allergic to the fly saliva. I have to keep him covered and the reviews convinced me to try this one! I am happy with my Shires blanket I bought many years ago.
jillbean13 on May 30, 2017
stays in place even if the ear covers come off. thicker than I was expecting. makes my girl sweat more living in Florida, but it completely protects her from the bugs that love eating at her skin. sturdy too, even with the small frays from her rubbing on trees, it hasn't ripped yet. it'll survive for the next season, hopefully more

Problem with biting midges, borderline sweet itch/allergic/sensitive horse in warm wet coastal climate and can't afford $350 for a Boett sheet. Hope this will work.
Debra N on May 16, 2016
My horse has severe allergies to gnats. This one has the most coverage I've seen.
jillian d on Sep 2, 2015
It has superior coverage for the horse's neck which is a sensitive area for fly bites.

BEST ANSWER: Shires Sweet Itch Combo Fly sheet offers excellent coverage and protection for my 14hh Icelandic gelding with summer eczema. It is durable and holds up to his rolling and romping around. I can recommend it.
Does it have UV protection?
Chancie B on Mar 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I use the Combo Fly Sheet on my Appendix Quarter Horse mare. She is extrememly allergic to insect bites. It protects her as thoroughly as any sheet I have ever used, and I believe it does have UV protection because her coat has never been more shiny and beautiful as it is since wearing the fly sheet.
need sizing directions. Do you measure to side of tail, center of tail, or center of tail minus 4 inches?
A shopper on Apr 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Measuring Instructions - Stand your horse as square as possible, measure from the center of chest around side of the body to the point of the horse's rump just before the tail. If you horse ends up measuring between sizes always round up to the next size to ensure full coverage.
Does this come with a detachable neck?
Lisa M on May 29, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Neck is not detachable, it is part of the blanket.
Does this blanket have any UV protection?
Olivia P on Feb 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Not that i'm aware of our horses are turned out at night in the summer and put in stalls during the day. It's pretty durable, my horse is out with 3 other horses and he plays really rough with one of them. It only ended up with a rip in the tail flap, also I washed it every week too. It worked amazing for my horse last summer and it's the first summer he hasn't rubbed his mane and tail off. I'm going to buy another one for this summer so I have two to rotate on him.
How many folks are using it successfully for a gelding? I am wondering if the geldings
urinate into the belly band as that would be a mess.
Liz D on Jun 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The belly band doesn't interfere with my gelding's sheath. When he tries to bend around to scratch his sheath with his teeth he still can, but only when he's lying down, legs spread, like a cat. He's still pretty flexible for a 20yr old. I've tried everything for his sweet itch(including over 3K for allergy shots!) and this fly sheet has been by far the most help. The only messy part is the tail cover, which my gelding dirties by holding his tail to the side, rather than out when he poops. Oh well, it can't be perfect, but it's close. My 1st one lasted over a year with no tears, but I finally gave up after about 1.5 yrs and bought another one.
Does the head part over the ears rub on the forelock at all? My horse has a beautiful thick forlock, but she’s also black and I want to keep her black. Will start to do night turn out only in summer.
A shopper on Apr 30, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The part that slips over the ears didn't damage my Haflinger's very thick and long forelock. He wore this sheet alternated with another all last summer, and the year before. This sheet holds up very well and I think you will find it money well spent.
Does this come with fly boots?
A shopper on Mar 25, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It does not come with fly boots but you can get a set separately. It also does not have leg straps either.
does a fly mask that goes over the ears fit over this neck/head piece? Thank you.
Andrea G on Apr 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I haven’t tried it but it should fit. I love this sheet. It is very durable. Because of the over the ears style neck and belly protection I used it under the winter blanket too. I bought a second sheet when they were on sale as a back up and haven’t had to use it yet. I did minor repairs on the neck piece where the stitching came apart, After washing it on my home sewing machine, it is as good as new and it will last much longer than expected. My stallion lives outside with shelter year round in Montana. We have raised a lot of horses over 45 years. Shires Sweetich sheet is the best investment I’ve ever made.
My horse love to RUB on the side of the Rubin shed as shred all of my fly sheets. So I have been buying sheets made of PVC. Is this rip stop as tough as PVC?
Christa P on Jul 5, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I don't know what brand you are referring to as PVC, but these blankets have worked really well for our sweet itch horse. He has 3 that we rotate and wash. Has pulled the center belly strap off all of them, but doesn't seem to effect function. They are more durable then any other we have tried, including Boett and Rambo. They do not have coverage between the front legs, which is a bit unfortunate. Wish they came in pony size and our sweet itch pony would be wearing one too. If you can string a stand of electric wire along the edge of your shed it may help stop the rubbing.
Does this sheet run true to size. My pony is in between sizes. 70.5. Should I buy the 72" or the 69"?
Thx
Judy??
A shopper on May 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: They seem to run true to size, although we had to get the next larger size due to our overfed wide girth horse.
I have a size 72 thats to big it rubs my geldings shoulders raw will the 69 work or will it be to small? He is a 15.2-15.3 Hand horse.
A shopper on Jun 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Im not sure since I don't know the build of your horse. My paint & quarter are 15H & 15.1, they wear size 75. My 14H petite paint pony wears a 69.....he gets some rubbing on the hair of his shoulders/chest because of how he's built & the fact that he's in between sizes, but it doesn't cause any other probs.
Are both sides of belly band adjustable? My mare is long but sleek and I got the Wethabeeta Comfit in two sizes and the belly band hung way too low and I was afraid she would get her hind leg caught up in it or that flies could very comfortably munch away even more in that protected space.
jodi l on Sep 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this is one of the few fly sheets with buckles on both sides. This helps 2 ways: more precise fit, and also the weight of the buckles is equal on both sides so the sheet doesn't sag and get crooked (which happens when there are buckles on only one side, the weight of the buckles on the one side pulls the light weight material over to that side).
if my horse should you have it be a little bigger than her size?
A shopper on May 8, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I would not order up a size. This Shires Fly Sheet is cut generously, at least as well as a Rambo. The buckles allow for quite a lot of adjustment at chest and girth, and both neck and back lengths will fit long-backed horses yet stay in place on more compact builds. Hope this helps you make the right decision.
Is there a warranty?
Lilly on Jul 8, 2019
BEST ANSWER: not exactly. No fly sheet is indestructible. In fact I would rather have the coat tear than have my horses injured if they get caught up in it. Having said that, I am very happy with this sheet and own 4 of them. They breathe well in the heat and have solved our "sweet itch" i.e. midge sensitivity in my mare who used to rub her tail off when I used other sheets.
Is this sheet good for mosquitos? I feel like most fabrics are too soft and they bite through.
Cheri N on Jun 9, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Cherie! The description states that this offers complete protection from all biting insects.
I just started using this flysheet on my black mare, not only two days of wearing it and it’s already rubbing her shoulders. Anything I can do to help it not rub all the hair off her shoulders???
Dani23 on May 24, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Can you try a larger size or leaving it off during the day? I have a 16 h WB gelding who has terrible issues with itchiness from mosquitoes and biting midges. He just wears the sheet overnight in the pasture and I let his blanket air out on a rack during the day. He wears a 78" shires sweet-itch rug. He skin and weight have looked much better since he started wearing it.
I live in a very hot climate. If this material is heavy, what could you recommend? It gets up to 114 + degrees here
Jayne U on May 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Jayne! This fly sheet is highly breathable and made from a lightweight 600 Denier ripstop mesh fabric.
I live in Central Florida where the nights can be warm too in the summer. Does anyone living in Florida have experience with this sheet?
A shopper on Feb 11, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This item is just fly sheet it is a light and breathable material with uv protection. So it would be fine to use in the summer.
