Helpful Hints:
In areas having exceptionally hard water, using distilled or purified water may improve trap performance. In areas of heavy fly populations use several traps in different locations. Never seal dead flies in a closed container. Doing so may result in a hazardous explosion.

Maintenance:
The trap contents should be agitated at least twice weekly to thoroughly wet all trapped flies. Add water as necessary to keep the fluid level 1/2" below the surface of trapped flies. Do not allow the trap to dry out. Without adequate agitation, fly larvae (maggots) may appear as a layer of dry dead flies accumulates in the trap. If this should occur, add one teaspoon of liquid dish soap and enough water to wet all files thoroughly. Maggots will drown in soapy water.

These fly traps work and they're very convenient. Quite stinky but worth it.

I have had the best luck with this trap - tried many others, but this one is definitely most effective. Just make sure to hang it beyond reach because you definitely do not want that smelly liquid on you!

These are hands down the best fly traps I've used. Tried others...but keep coming back to these.

Put out 3 of them 2 days ago (with some raw chicken in each of them) and catching LOTS of flies. Using along a pasture fence ... wouldn't use by a stall or will attract more flies to your poor horses! Also wouldn't put where bored horses can play with it. In Texas where it is super hot and sunny the most flies are being caught by the one shaded by a tree.

Does anyone know for sure if these have to be in the sun to work? I would like to hang one inside my chicken coop, I know there are flies in there because they are thick whenever I open the door to get the eggs, but I need to know about the sunlight issue

BEST ANSWER: I think that mostly it is by smell. Right at first they need to have been sloshed around well to get the powdery stuff throughout the water. They also need to be hanging about a foot above the ground. Don't hang high... this is really important. They are kinda slow to begin catching. May take a couple of days or more. But when they get some dead ones in the trap it goes into full action just give it a slosh around every once in a while, like once a month. My area is shade, but sometimes it is in sun...I know it works for me.
does this work for stable flies?
      A shopper on Apr 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The attractant, in my opinion, needs some heat/sunshine to develop the odor of dead stuff which happens outside. You could try hanging the traps on the barn door handles to get the heat/sunshine. The traps do trap lots of flies and are great tied along the fence line. Our horses are outside 24/7 and the flies don't like the shade of the barn.
