Horses Turned Outside Without Shelter:
Tough1 Turnout Sheet and Blanket materials are waterproof and designed to keep your horse dry. However, if your horse is turned out in a field without a run in shed or shelter during prolonged rain or heavy downpours, your horse may still get wet, especially in the neck and tail areas.
When using a blanket or sheet it is critical to monitor the fluctuating climate and temperatures, even with a blanket that is waterproof and breathable. The wicking properties of a breathable blanket are designed to wick away normal body heat. When a blanket is too heavy, the heat and moisture cannot be wicked away fast enough causing your horse to sweat. The temperature and the length of your horse’s coat will determine what weight of blanket you should use. For this reason, most people who choose to blanket horses have several articles of horse clothing that offer varying levels of warmth.
When selecting a blanket ensure to take into account your horse’s behavior, environment, or other horses that may be turned out with your horse. The lower the denier number, the less strength the material has. 420 Denier and 600 Denier are not recommended for horses that bite, chew, or rub on blankets or for horses turned out with a companion or in a group.
Always ensure your horse’s blanket is properly fitted and all straps are adjusted correctly. If a blanket is too tight or too loose, straps may break and material may tear. For younger horses or horses turned out with a companion or in groups, it is recommended to purchase 1200 Denier or 1680 Denier material as these are stronger materials and are less likely to tear.
Certain types of fencing, such as barbwire, or foreign objects, such as nails, will easily tear any blanket, no matter what the denier, so always inspect the area in which your horse is kept to remove any nails or jagged fencing that may cause damage. There are no horse blankets that are guaranteed to not rip or tear.

My horse is older and the higher neck helps with warmth and keeping the blanket in place comfortably for him. I have a lighter weight one and he actually likes his blanket..he used to always hate blankets.

This is my second Tough-1 blanket in 7 years. They are well worth the cost as they hold up to their name. I have purchased other named brands and they do not last.

I've used this specific blanket for years. It's very durable and keeps my older horses warm in the frigid North Idaho/Eastern WA temps.

High necks are the way to go to keep your horse nice and warm in the winter months.
barbara c on Oct 9, 2018
My mom's horse destroyed her blanket just before a snow storm. After searching other sites, they were out of stock on the size I needed. Stateline had this blanket at a reasonable cost and the quality meets what I was looking for. I've always been satisfied with products purchased at Stateline, so I'm sure this will work just fine.

Great blankets for saddlebreds! I ship them to SBR in New Jersey.
Brenda C on Dec 22, 2017
The weather can be unpredictable. Warmth and dryness is the key to my horse being comfortable. the High Neck allows for great comfort and stays in place and it wont rub off my horses beautiful mane. If it rains the water will not freeze mane. The blankets rub and move and this makes my horses tender or leaves rub marks. These are sturdy and fits all breeds nicely! Comfortable and even my rescued Mustang enjoys the blanketing process. Thank you State Line~
Melissa B on Sep 23, 2017
Good reviews. Need a high neck blanket for 33 yr. old as old blanket is rubbing withers.
Joyce S on Jan 8, 2017
I purchased a Saxon blanket for my 15.2 gelding but I'm finding it slipping and a little short around his girth. I thought I would try the Tough 1 blanket to see if it fits better than Saxon. The reviews I read were good and everyone liked the high neck on this blanket.
Wendy W on Dec 13, 2016
1200 denier always lasts the best. Though in the past, I would have gotten the neck cover, but I don't feel it is necessary for the added warmth here in this area of California.

My gelding has a standard cut blanket right now that lets the rain run down his neck and chest. I'm hoping this will fix that problem. Also, we're having a colder than normal winter and I want to have a heavier blanket on hand.

Lynn F on Feb 16, 2014
Great experience with Tough-1 brand blankets in the past. after a long hunt to find my specific requirements this blanket fits the bill 100%. from price, to fill, to high neck, to waterproof, and of course the velcro. My Tough-1 that I have now still looks brand new and my horse has been wearing it for 3 years now. No tears, damage, or staining. I confidently stand behind their blankets and will buy them again in the future!

Is this a good quality blanket for the winter?
TaylynH on Nov 3, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Taylyn H YES this is the best blanket I have bought to date. My mare stay"s out in a run out all year round and is tough on her stuff. She is warm and dry even in the worst weather possible rain, snow, wind, cold I put a fleece liner under her Tough one when it get's below 20 and she is good. This is the BEST
our horse is 48" from whithers to tail base what size do I need in this blanket?
A shopper on Feb 13, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Hi. If you can re-measure there is an easier way to assure a proper fit. Please take a measure tape and place this on the center of the front of his chest. This is about where the neck point meets with the chest. Continue across the side of your horse to the buttocks approximately 10 inches below the base of the tail. If you do not have a pliable measuring tape, you may find it helpful to use a string. I have used a string pre-cut to 84 inches. I took the one end with my left hand and placed it on the left side of the center of the chest and continued across the left side to the left buttock about one foot below the base of the tail. I tied a knot where that ended and then measured with a tape measure just how long that was. I ended up moving up 1 inch for the blanket. The blanket fit wonderfully! Take care and I hope this helped.
Why is this the "One" that you chose for your horse?
Hanna V on Jan 28, 2014
BEST ANSWER: My horse only goes out a few hours a day, and I wanted a blanket that was an economical price and had the high neckline. I find that this design helps avoid getting rubs on her shoulders and chest. This blanket is a little oversized compared to others that I have bought in the same size - 78, but I don't mind because it leaves space for the blanket liner of the same brand. I really like the combo effect because the liner wicks sweat - in NY where I live the temperatures have been fluctuating a lot, so I know she won't be standing in her stall wet if she's wearing both the liner and the TO blanket. I've had the blanket a little over a year and it just developed it's first tear after 2 winters of use. It's not super water proof, but holds up with light rain. Hope that helps!
Is the T/O blanket the only thing I put on my horse.Or do I need to purchase something that goes under the blanket?
Tia W on Feb 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Tia I like this blanket. It fits my large Missouri Fox Trotter well. I assume your question is about warmth. The answer will depend on many variables: how cold it is, wind chill, whether the horse is in good condition, whether the horse is acclimated to the local temperatures, the age of the horse, whether the horse is indoors or out or both, whether the horse can walk around to stay warm, etc. Here in Michigan, the blanket is fine for zero temps.. I tend to put a liner under for wind chills below minus 10. But I am not sure he needs it. My horse is fat, 16 years old, and is free stalled. He has a big pasture to walk around in. He can get out of the wind, but does not always choose to do so. The blanket works for him.
are leg straps detachable?
Patricia H on Nov 28, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The leg straps are detachable and replaceable, which as we all know that use blankets on our horses is important because the leg straps take a lot!
What is the cold rating for the tough 1 high neck, 300 blanket?
Jayne F on Jan 18, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I don't know of a cold rating either, but last winter was the coldest ever, and even though my horse was kept in the barn on the worst days, I could tell he was always comfortable and happy to have this blanket on. He's a big baby who hates to be cold or wet and expresses his discomfort by being ornery. When he wears this blanket he doesn't behave this way at all. I think the high neck is a big help, along with how well it comes down around his belly, covers his chest and down over his butt. He's an "easy keeper" so though a 78 would probably be fine on him, I got him an 81 and I love the way it fits him. Washed it for this season and it's just like new. Again, I'm so glad I've added it to my collection. I'd buy another.
I have been looking at all of the Tough-1 styles of blankets that are a medium warmth fill like the 200-250. I really like this high neck style one, but am wondering if it comes in a lighter fill than 300?
A shopper on Oct 16, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I just purchased one, a 78 for my ottb. I love it so far. It had a tag actually that said heavyweight. I dont know anything about blankets, but it does feel heavier, at least its heavier then the medium weight stable blanket i had for a while. But its great to have if you live in a area that gets real cold/plenty of snow (im in NJ - well my horse is). Not sure if it comes in a lighter fill.
what low temperature with clipped course is blanket good for?
laura n on Nov 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Re: White Mountains of Arizona. My elder ASB mare is not clipped, and has a rather fine winter coat. She only has a solid 3-sided shelter in a large paddock -- no barn. She has remained healthy, toasty and dry in this amazing turn-out blanket during past snowstorms and mountain temps of -10F. I'll be buying another one for back-up soon.
Im not sure I need this heavy of a blanket. I am looking for minimal to moderate warmth with waterproof. I have a 16 yr old mare, healthy, central MO location. 1200 denier. Love the high neck on this blanket. Would you suggest this blanket or another?
D B on Dec 13, 2015

What is the difference between this blanket and the Snuggit? Which would be a better fit for a TB with high withers?
Heather T on Aug 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Tough 1 high neck is slightly different to the snug-git. Both have a high neck feature, the snug-git has fleece wither protection and is a medium weight blanket. The high neck is a heavy weight blanket. The sizes is based off the measurement of your horse. Start by measuring center of the chest around to backside of rump.
Hi! i live in Montana we r expecting

My horse measures 48" from Withers to the base of his tail. What size blanket should I buy with this type of blanket?
Donna W on Feb 13, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Thanks for your question unfortunately to get an accurate measurement for a blanket you would need to measure this way....

1) Stand your horse square.
2) Place your measuring tape at the center of the chest.
3) Measure from the middle of the chest to the center of the tail one side. and that is the horse's blanket size.
do you make size 86 blankets?
tracey w on Nov 29, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I thought I needed a 86" also, but the 84" fit him well. In fact, it fit him very well. I am still using it & I don't have to worry about any slippage.
my horse has been measured as a 73" size. Do I order the 72" or 75"?
A shopper on Nov 6, 2014
BEST ANSWER: If your horse measures an odd number please add one inch to the measurement, this will produce the most accurate number for the size of your horse.

If measuring for a European cut blanket, please reduce the size of your size selection by one size .
