Horses Turned Outside Without Shelter:
Tough1 Turnout Sheet and Blanket materials are waterproof and designed to keep your horse dry. However, if your horse is turned out in a field without a run in shed or shelter during prolonged rain or heavy downpours, your horse may still get wet, especially in the neck and tail areas.

When using a blanket or sheet, it is critical to monitor the fluctuating climate and temperatures, even with a blanket that is waterproof and breathable. The wicking properties of a breathable blanket are designed to wick away normal body heat. When a blanket is too heavy, the heat and moisture cannot be wicked away fast enough, causing your horse to sweat. The temperature and the length of your horse’s coat will determine what weight of blanket you should use. For this reason, most people who choose to blanket horses have several articles of horse clothing that offer varying levels of warmth.

When selecting a blanket, be sure to take into account your horse’s behavior, environment, or other horses that may be turned out with your horse. The lower the denier number, the less strength the material has. 420 Denier and 600 Denier are not recommended for horses that bite, chew or rub on blankets, or for horses turned out with a companion or in a group. Always ensure your horse’s blanket is properly fitted and all straps are adjusted correctly. If a blanket is too tight or too loose, straps may break and material may tear.

For younger horses or horses turned out with a companion or in groups, it is recommended to purchase 1200 Denier or 1680 Denier material, as these are stronger materials and are less likely to tear. Certain types of fencing, such as barbwire, or foreign objects, such as nails, will easily tear any blanket no matter what the denier, so always inspect the area in which your horse is kept to remove any nails or jagged fencing that may cause damage. There are no horse blankets that are guaranteed to not rip or tear.

**Due to manufacturing issues the design/color portions of this blanket may be reversed. The Tooled Leather pattern may be across body with solid colors around the edges. This will not affect the integrity of the blanket, only the look.**

I purchased this blanket style a couple years ago for my older quarter horse and I am truly impressed with the durabilty and quality. I haven't had 1 rip or tear, all the hardware is stable and all the seams are intact with no pulled threads. During the same amount of time - I've had to either replace or repair 3 blankets for my warmblood due to rips and tears or faulty hardware. He can be a menace in the field and needed a blanket that would be indestructible - this is the one.

We bought this blanket for 2 of our 3 geldings last year and it has held up- no tears, and is nice and adjustable in the neck. Now the third gelding needs a new blanket and I'm hoping this one will hold up just as nicely.

good price, good weight, cute
Lynda S on Dec 15, 2018
I was looking for a 1200D medium weight turnout, with legs straps, and I like the snap front closure, making it easier to get on and off. I also picked this color because I thought it would look good on my buckskin gelding.

Hi I can't seem to see the front closure well. My last tough always slide open in front because there was no velcro. What is this buckle AND clasp system look like?
A shopper on Feb 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The Velcro keeps the front from tucking back under and letting the cold in.
The straps have the quick snaps on them which makes it easier . You don't have to fool with constantly adjusting the straps, adjust once and use the snaps !
I love the snugget Velcro also, it prevents the blanket from sagging on a narrow chested horse. I will not use any other kind of blanket from now on and I have been blanketing horses for 50 years.
What is the weight? Lite. Medium or heavy?
Karen R on Oct 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I consider it a heavy. I live in the Midwest and there is no heat nor insulation in the barn. So temps drop below 0 Fahrenheit. Effective blanket for my OTTB.
The colors in the 1200 Denier of the blanket seam a lot brighter than the ones in the 600 denier version, are they different? or is it just lighting? looking at the black one btw

Tough-1 1200D Snuggit Tooled Leather Blanket
Tough-1 600D Tooled Leather Turnout Blanket
Tough-1 600D Tooled Leather Turnout Blanket
BEST ANSWER: They may be a little different, because the fabric is slightly different. The 1200 is much stronger than the other.. For turnout purposes. I love mine!
Is this leather tooled tough 1 blanket waterproof?
Bianca S on Jan 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I forget what it said in the ad and on the blanket info when I got it, but I have had it on my horses (liked the first one so much I bought two more! they look SO CLASSY!) Anyway, my horses have worn them in drizzly weather and remained dry and comfortable. I don't use them in winter, resorting to a much heavier weight for the warmth. It gets below 0 here.
Is the blanket water resistant ?
A shopper on Nov 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It’s water resistant to a point, just like any other blanket out there. It’s very insulated though, so if it is moist enough to saturate the outer layer (torrential downpour), then it probably won’t make it through the lining too.
Someone said you run large?
A shopper on Oct 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I ordered one for my Arab (14.2 H), and one for my Tennessee Walker (16H). Both seem to fit as expected. Plus they look really nice. They are not very heavy though, so when it gets really cold here I have to put on a heavy weight blanket under it.
how do you clean this blanket?
Beth K on Dec 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I take mine to a horse blanket cleaning service when it gets too bad. I have a heavy weight one, so it is too big to go in my washer. There is not much leather on this, a small bit at the front by the buckles. Great blanket though.
Do you have help on correct measuring technique for horse blankets? I have bought two. One is a little small and the other quite a bit too large. I have been given different info from friends and from owner of feed store, in the past. I would like to buy a blanket that fits better. Thanks
Peggy C on Dec 4, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Measure from the center of the chest to the center of the butt.
I love the Snugget's because some horses have a narrow chest and the regular blankets just hang or droop on them. With the Snugget you can adjust it to make them fit like it was made for that horse !
what is the difference between this tooled leather and the regular blanket w 200 gm fill ?

Tough-1 1200D Snuggit Tooled Leather Blanket
Tough-1 1200D Snuggit Tooled Leather Blanket
Tough-1 1200D Snuggit Turnout 200g
Tough-1 1200D Snuggit Turnout 200g
BEST ANSWER: There is no difference, really. It's just that the bottom of the one has a design that sort of "looks like" tooled leather. I bought a black heavyweight blanket with the tooled leather design in grey. I think it's very attractive and the blanket has proven to be very good and almost indestructible. Good luck to you!
what is the filling, 200 or 220?
A shopper on Nov 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It's the weight of the blanket and will tell you what weather the blanket can hold up to. 300 gr is for very cold ( think Montana); 220/200 is for med cold (hi desert)
anyone make a horse blanket with breakaway straps or buckles?
A shopper on Feb 12, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I've never seen one.. Or heard of it, they do make elastic so it's possible to get out of if in emergency
is this blanket breathable?
A shopper on Nov 10, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Tough-1 tells us it's breathable up to a point; if the horse is overheated, then the horse could still sweat.
Is it possible to get one guaranteed to have the pattern fabric on the lower part?
A shopper on Sep 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Unfortunately it would not be possible to guarantee which portion of the blanket will have the pattern. We do apologize for any inconvenience!
My horse measures 73 what size would I purchase?
A shopper on Dec 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Measuring Instructions:
Stand your horse as square as possible, measure from the center of chest around side of the body to the point of the horse's rump just before the tail. If your horse ends up measuring between sizes always round up to the next size to ensure full coverage.
what is the thickness?
A shopper on Nov 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Fill: 250 gram
I am in Canada and the sizes for blankests seem to be different here. My horses usually take a size 76 but i see your sizes go from 75 to 78, what would be the equivalent to a size 76?
Donna B on Oct 31, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The sizes are the same in Canada as in the USA. The thing is many blanket Manufacturers have gone to 3 inch size increments (69, 72, 75, 78, 81) instead of two inch increments. If you need a 76, shop for a blanket brand still made in traditional two inch sizes. Examples of those would be Kensington, Tuffrider, Pessoa, Horseware, and Professionals Choice.
