It is very heavy duty and well made. My horse is 16.1 about 1200lbs and I took it up so fits many sizes.

Excellent for Budget-Conscious Buyer
THE GOOD: this is a great caveson for the price. THE BAD (IMPORTANT): The brass hardware on the nose is secured with a single keeper on each side. There is NO keeper for the under-strap. The overlay strap SLIPS OFF under the chin and does not stay put. I knew this ordering the item. Two considerations: take the caveson to a leather repair and have a second keeper sewn in, or secure it with vetwrap, etc. Just my suggestion. Also, to mirror a traditional caveson, feel free to remove the browband. SIZING: I own a 16.2 TB mare with a refined head. She is on the cusp of horse size / oversize. I ordered this item in oversize, and am glad I did. It appeared large coming out of the box, but the leather offers easy hole punch placement on all straps, which I did, so now it will fit a variety of horses. BOTTOM LINE: This item is NOT a hand-crafted caveson from the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. But it IS a great low-budget alternative to get you started, in my humble opinion. Good luck.

Poor quality control
This item arrived with the metal pitted (corroded) with parts of it green. It should never have been allowed to leave the stockroom. Since this is the second product in a row that I have had to return because of defect, I am not a happy camper. I will shop elsewhere in the future.

DO NOT PURCHASE
Most awful cavesson I've ever purchased. On the back of the noseband, there are no keeper straps for the leather and the buckle, so the back of the straps stay in place, but the noseband goes where it pleases. Also, the metal piece going over the noseband (sorry for the unprofessional terminology) with the rings is only attached by the leather straps, two on each side. My horse is in training and today, he pulled back, and the metal piece pulled down onto his nose. The cheek strap is placed too high on the headset. It slips into a throat latch. Also, I bought a full sized. I have a 17.3 hand Thoroughbred. All he's ever fit in is full. But with this, I would tighten the top buckle and the cheek strap would go up. If I loosened it to make the cheek strap go back again, the nose band almost covered his nostrils. Very poorly made cavesson, would certainly not recommend to ANYONE.

awesome

Disappointed!
Bought this & there are no keeper straps to keep the metal hardware in place so it slips down off the leather noseband as soon as you use it

Oversize fit & Stiff Leather
I have a large Appendix who oftentimes requires warmblood-sized head gear. I had this caveson adjusted to its smallest size and it was still too loose a fit, not to mention very stiff.

Love It
I just received this cavesson in the mail and I was actually very surprised at the way that the leather felt and the padding on the nose band. It also seems like it will be a large enough size to fit on my warmbloods very large head. I am going to take it for a test run tonight, I am eager to see how it works. Will definitely add to my review. So far great product for the price

I was hoping to find the Oversize version, but with the sale price I couldn't pass this one up. I do leatherworking so I'm sure I can add length and keepers to make up the difference if it doesn't fit right.

I chose this caveson because I need a heavy duty caveson for my 17 hand thoroughbred, who is being retrained from his racing experience. Several reviews point out that various straps need keepers, and the fit is not great, but there were no other leather options.

is there padding on the noseband?
Cy G on May 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Not quite. It fits loose around nose & it is lined with a material, but it isn't padded, like squishy soft. The horse I got this for is extremely sensative around the nose & he wears it fine, although I keep it loose & don't "saw" on it while in use. I have placed thin cotton quilt batting (rolled between harnass & nose) on occasion during summer & when he has hurt himself. I like the product, but it does "shift". This horse is an easy worker for me, but not others, so as with any horse gear, just keep an eye on it. I do use the top ring on nose only, & no problems.
I'm new to cavesons. Can this be used with a bit?
A shopper on Oct 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Do not quote me, but the cavesson is used bitless to aide in training by using pressure on the nose area vs how bits work. Two entirely different methods of guiding the horse. The answer to this question requires a lengthy response on horse training & how different tack does different things to gain the same end result: a responsive, well trained horse. Your best advice may be to do research, or ask an experienced trainer.
