The Husband Horse

Some of us are lucky enough to find a life partner who has been around horses and riding forever. But that’s not always the case. If you are a horse person, chances are you have heard or used the term “husband horse” on more than one occasion.

This term describes a horse who is safe enough for your inexperienced husband, fiancé, boyfriend, or any significant other to be around. (Other terms include “bomb-proof” and “well-broke”.)

The husband horse is a specific term, so we have to use specific examples. Let’s say you’ve been riding for years on end and you finally meet a special someone who you care enough about to introduce to your parents and your friends, and the only one left to meet is your hoofed soulmate.

When the day finally comes, everyone is nervous. What if your horse dislikes him or her? The relationship will be surely doomed!

After the meet-and-greet happens, and everyone can breathe again, horse talk will be implemented into your relationship. Whether or not your significant other wants to hear it or be a part of it, it is embedded.

The conversation topic will evolve into more and more in-person interactions with horses, and eventually “I need to find you a HUSBAND HORSE!” will spill out of your mouth.

When you picture a husband horse, what do you see? Most people would have the same answer: a big, quiet draft horse. A horse who will look intimidating but act anything but. This horse will tackle any trails like a pro and will be confident enough for both himself or herself as well as your significant other.

At the end of the day, there is a perfect husband horse out there to fit any situation, experience level, or personality. What’s your husband horse story?
