The History of Horseback Riding

Planes, trains and automobiles. No. This is not in reference to the comedy flick from the 80’s. These outlets are how we get around in this day and age. You can even add electric cars, scooters and motorcycles to the list. Before all of these technologies were invented, we relied on the horse. There was a time when horses were the main way of transportation across the entire world. Evidence reflects that people started using horses as far back as 6000 BC. However, it is said that horseback riding may have begun around 4500 BC. During the Medieval Period, horses were valued by their usage, not by their bloodlines. For example, the chargers were used for warfare, and the carthorses were used for pulling carts. The ancient culture of horseback riding has contributed a lot to the current styles of riding. Eventually, humans went from riding and driving horses daily due to necessity to riding and driving horses recreationally.
