The customer reviews were key. I have ridden bareback most of my life. The light weight will be perfect and the reviews sound as though the pad will help to provide a pretty stable seat.

I actually have been looking at this bareback pad for years. And decided with it being on sale to just take the dive. I like that it has non-slip for horse and rider, that it has an actual cinch and that you are not sitting on a strap like some of the others that I have looked at. In addition to that I see this has dee rings that will be convenient and useful.

I borrowed someone else's the other day and my horse and I were surprised how nice it was. I never ride bareback and I felt completely comfortable at all 3 gaits. He was much happier--it makes me think his saddle needs a fitting.

This bareback pad has a sticky seat, helps to keep me on board during figure 8's, etc. After I got the pad, I realized most of the others in the barn who have bareback pads have this one, too.

donna f on Feb 24, 2017
Bought this on sale and have enjoyed using it. The next best thing bareback pad will be one I custom design and make out of some nice shearling, quality memory foam and just having simple billets so I can use my horse's normal English girth. That way, I can put it on my Belgians or Morgans!

Sounded good. Turned out GREAT! I am a bareback rider, but now have 2 step daughters who want to ride. I don't want their learning to cause grief w/ their other mother when they fall off and say they didn't have anything to hold onto (lol). I added a leather strap upfront for a little something to hold onto, and both the girls and the horses love it. I actually tried it out the other day and was REALLY impressed. It's super comfortable, stays in place, and gives the rider a lot of grip.
REBECCA R on Sep 13, 2016
Nice pad. Wanted to try riding with a bareback pad and reviews for this one were good, price was good and it works well. I don't yet though.
Susan B on Sep 3, 2016
Read the reviews and wanted to try riding "bareback"- hope my horse is as willing also. I'm 65 yrs young and my horse has never been rode bareback! Wish me lots of luck!!!
Jonni S on Jun 20, 2016
I love this bare back pad! Make sure you use the girth that comes with it and don't try to switch to a different one. If you do, things get weird and the pad doesn't fit right. Been very pleased with this! My guy got very skinny and bony and this was some nice added cushion when riding bareback.

I always rode bareback when I was younger. I read some of the reviews and hope that this will help with my back issues. Have several ruptured disc and an surgery last May to remove a 5cm tumor off my spine so I am in need of comfort. I am looking forward to it's arrival.

Erin C on Jun 10, 2015
I ride with a youth bareback drill team. Over the last year I have tried different bareback pads and found this to be the best on the market. Four things make this pad amazing - it's comfortable and conforms to the horses shape, with a low profile girth that does not interfere with my leg cues, and it does not slip or slid when the horses. sweat.

Will this pad fit a friesian/percheron cross that is 17.2 hands?
A shopper on Oct 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes my horse is just about 16h, his is only on the 6th hole on each side. Plenty of holes to fit bigger horses! :)
Does this have center seam?
A shopper on Sep 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The seam is not noticable. This is one of the best purchases I have made. The backing is rubber and never slips, the seat is comfortable and the girth is elastic and stable. I actually had a very successful dressage training on this pad when my horse had raised spots from a skin allergy that made her saddle uncomfortable.
How long is the girth? We have fat ranch horses!
A shopper on Sep 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Dimensions:
Length: 23", cutback at withers, 27" overall
Width: 17" center seam to bottom of flap
Girth with keepers: 29" from buckle to buckle
Entire girth: 82" maximum, 49" minimum
Will this fit a welsh pony and a thorough bread?
A shopper on Jun 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi there! Below are the measurements for this item!

Length: 23", Cutback at withers, overall 27"
Width: 17" Center seam to bottom of flap
Well padded girth with keepers measures 29" from buckle to buckle
Entire girth measures 82" in length when let out to its maximum, minimum 49"
Does it have a strap to hang on to while riding?
Jill G on Mar 29, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No, it does not. But I teach kids and easily added a strap. It has 2 rings on it. You just need to purchase a strap for five or six dollars and buckle it on
Can I use a different girth with this? I’d like to use one with a d ring for a breast collar.
E N on Jan 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: You should probably check with the manufacturer, but for safety reasons,I would never use a breast collar with a bareback pad - with a breast collar, the horse's powerful chest and shoulder muscles could easily pull the pad to one side and off you go! We love these bareback pads - bought 5 of them to use with our horses which our 4-H and lesson kids ride. Just wish they came in different colors since we color-code all our tack to make tacking up more efficient for the kids'
Can stirrups be used with this item?
Charity B on Nov 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No. We got bareback pads with stirrups before this purchase and they seemed unsafe and made the pad slip around . This bareback pad is the best one we have ever had. It is still used all the time. We got rid of all the others. Great quality. Fits all of our horses. Comfortable.
Can you add stirrups?
Lisa E on Oct 15, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I wouldn't ever add stirrups to a bare back pad. It is not designed to have stirrups so adding them can cause a number of problems. 1 being a bare back pad can't be clinched down like a saddle and can move. 2 If you add stirrups and you put more weight in one over the other, that will cause it to flip upside down! Happy riding!
Will this fit a 17.2 hand Clydesdale; approx 1900 lbs.?
LU ANN B on Sep 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Not sure, it was a good fit for our quarter horse who is on the larger size and it is certainly nicely flexible. Great quality too, but Clydesdales can be pretty big. Sorry wasn't a solid answer.
Do you think this would fit a mare that is 12.2 hands? She pony size but is built like a horse.
A shopper on Aug 21, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Likely so. My AQHA mare is 14.2. and rather petite. I use the sixth notch on each side. Love this pad. Have ridden many miles in it at all gaits. It is very secure and very comfortable. Never slips on her. She has average withers. Like it better than BB pads my friends have.
Does anyone else who owns this saddle have a problem with the girth buckle not being attached high enough?
Heidi P on Jul 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Works fine on my 14.2 AQHA mare. I use the 6th notch on each side - never slips. Have had it since 2016 and ridden many miles at all gaits. Love it.
Will this fit a 16.3 H Shire/Percheron draft who normally wears a 36" cinch?
Elizabeth B on Apr 11, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I think it will fit. It's a good size girth and the straps it attaches to have lots of holes, so it gives you more room. My friend has a Percheron cross, but he is super fat and only about 16 H. I tried to use it on him and it was almost too small; however, like I said, he's fat and has a huge barrel. I read other reviews on it and someone mentioned using it on their Percheron with room left over in the girth. I will tell you this - it is the BEST bareback pad I've ever seen. I had this one years ago, with the horse I used to have, and I loved it. I sold my horse and gave someone the pad, since I knew I wouldn't have a horse again for a while (small kids, busy life, etc.). As soon as I started riding again, I immediately bought this pad again. I absolutely love it and my horse is comfortable in it. It is everything everyone says it is in their reviews. Just buy it from a company that has a good return policy (just in case) and then you can try it and see. You could also buy a different girth to go on it, if you had to. The pad is worth it.
Is the seat part fleece or suede?
A shopper on Mar 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The seat is plush, not suede. I love this bareback pad! So comfortable! The bottom is tacky rubber that helps it stay in place.
Need to add a thin wool pad for a more comfortable fit. Can anyone help me with the correct size of the wool pad?
Thank you!
sandy c on Nov 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No cannot answer. Rhis pad is awesomely comforable without anything else but maybe because my horse comes with her own padding..
Does this pad sit directly on the spine of the horse or are there pads that prevent contact with the spine?
CampsWithHorses on Sep 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It does sit on the spine, however, you don't tighten it like a saddle. You leave it loose with four finger space. The material that it is made of prevents it from spinning. I have a high whithered, pronounced spine OTTB, it does not rub or aggravate her back. It has enough cushion to displace my bony bottom and we are both very comfortable. It is my favorite pad.
How thick is this bareback pad?
Isabella L on Jul 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It's thickest in the middle where the fleece part is. That's about the thickness of an English saddle pad and half pad. The non-fleece part is like a single thickness English pad. You will still feel the horse under this pad.
donkey?
A shopper on Apr 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Item Specifications:
Length: 23", Cutback at withers, overall 27"
Width: 17" Center seam to bottom of flap
Well padded girth with keepers measures 29" from buckle to buckle
Entire girth measures 82" in length when let out to its maximum, minimum 49"
Does it have a strap for rider to hold on?
Sabrina G on Apr 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, it does not, however there are rings in the front that you can run a leather strap through and make it possible to hold on. I personally would not depend on any bareback pad to hold on, you may consider a neck strap on your horse to hold on to as it would probably be safer. I hope this helps.
Does this pad fit ponies as well?
A shopper on Mar 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes - it fits my daughters 13.2H welsh cross!
Does it have a grab strap?
A shopper on Mar 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is not a grab strap-- but there are two metal rings on the top front where you could attach one like I did on my english saddle.
Can you add stirrups to it?
A shopper on Nov 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: there is the small possibility that stirrups can be added only if the stirrups can be removed and the strap somehow feed through the same opening that the girth strap already goes through. I'm not sure there will be enough room for both straps and how will you actually feed the stirrup strap through that opening. It would be sort of like trying to put another draw string through pajama pants but even harder since the bare back pad is not as flexible as pants. They do actually make bare back pads with stirrups. hope this helps
does this only provide extra comfort for the rider? or is there extra comfort for the horse that there isn't in the normal best friend's pad?
Valerie E on Oct 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I'm not really certain about the answer for the horse but we have two of these pads which we use on two different horses and we all seem happy with them...horses and riders. It certainly has more cushion than a traditional pad. We have found it to be a great value.
I have a 16.2 hand 1/2 draft 1/2 t-bred will this fit?
A shopper on Aug 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It will fit (it fits my 16.3 Oldenburg easily). If your horse has high withers, the regular best friend bareback pad will fit better (my mare has high withers and the regular fits better where the comfort plus is more into her withers, though it doesn't seem to bother her).
Does this work for very high withered horses?
A shopper on Jun 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I used it on a paint who did not have high withers and it was great. I would say it would offer some relief to the rider but not sure how much.
What would be the best way to clean this pad? Is it machine washable?
M N on Apr 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: First off, let me say this is a great bareback pad; my daughter loves it. She uses it a lot with her 17 yo gelding. We've never had to wash it, so I can't say how well it would do in a washing machine. We have the black pad, and her horse is a white appaloosa, so after each use she wipes down the underside of the pad and the girth with a damp rag, then brushes out the pad with a stiff brush. She never rides him hard enough with this pad to get him sweating, so cleaning is pretty easy.
Will this fit QH mare around 15 hh? And does it slip at all when you're trotting/cantering or jumping small jumps?
A shopper on Mar 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This is one size fits all but will fit your horse nicely. There is a lot of adjustments on the billits and if you needed to use it on a pony or draft, you can substitute a regular Western cinch in place of the one that comes with it for more sizing adjustments.

This is the best pad I have found for staying in place on the horse due to the location of the girth straps. My daughter rides for a bareback drill team and she practices in this twice a week. It rarely slips back at all, even when the horse is sweaty and they are jumping.
When will this product be back in stock? I ordered it over a month ago and it hasnt even shipped yet! Every few days they push the "estimated stock" day back. If I would have known it would take months to send I would not have ordered it. Very frustrating
A shopper on Feb 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We apologize -- it's frustrating for us as well. We receive in-stock dates from our suppliers for backordered items, but they are always estimated dates, and as you can see they may be pushed back. When stock comes in, we do fill backorders first.
what is the difference between this and the Thin Line Comfort Plus bareback pad?
CarolinaRoamer on Jan 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't have any experience with the Thin Line, but we LOVE our two Comfort Plus bareback pads. We use the pads on ALL five of our horses, four our 4-H kids who are just learning to ride, as well as for our own riding. he pads are very comfortable even on our high withered horses, and provide a lot of grip so the kids can relax their legs and still feel secure. The girth is stretchy so we always re-tighten after we ride for a couple of minutes.
will it fit large pony?
A shopper on Jan 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I'm sure it would you will probably have to put it on the tightest holes in order for it to fit. My mare uses a 32" cinch on a western saddle and a 30" on a barrel saddle and this works great for her and I don't have it at the tightest hole.
Does it include stirrups or is there a way to attach them?
A shopper on Nov 26, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No stirrups or way to attach them. This is the best bareback pad ever! We will buy several more. You should never us stirrups on a bareback pad or saddle that does not have a tree. It's bad for your horse.
