How to Measure: Cowboy Chaps

Chaps are a vital piece of riding gear, offering protection from the elements, providing extra grip in the saddle, and completing a traditional riding outfit. Whether you're buying Western full chaps or English half chaps, a proper fit is essential for comfort and safety. A pair that is too tight can restrict your movement, while chaps that are too loose can bunch up and be uncomfortable.

Here is a guide to measuring for both types of chaps to ensure you get the perfect fit.

What You'll Need

  • A flexible tape measure
  • A pen and paper
  • The riding pants you plan to wear with your chaps (jeans for Western, breeches for English)

How to Measure for Full Chaps (Western)

Western chaps typically come in one long piece, covering the entire leg.

  • Waist/Hip: Wear the jeans you would normally ride in. Measure around your hips where you want the top of the chaps to sit. Do not measure your natural waist.
  • Thigh: Stand with your legs together and have a friend measure the widest part of your thigh. The fit should be snug but not tight.
  • Inseam/Length: This is the most important measurement for a good fit. Wear your riding boots and have a friend measure from your crotch down the inside of your leg to the ground. This will ensure the chaps are long enough to cover your boot.

How to Measure for Half Chaps (English)

Half chaps are worn from the ankle up to the knee and are secured with a zipper or snaps.

  • Calf Circumference: With your breeches on, measure the widest part of your calf. The fit should be snug, as half chaps will stretch slightly with wear.
  • Height: While sitting down with your knee at a 90-degree angle, measure from the base of your ankle (just behind your ankle bone) to the back of your knee. The half chaps should come just to the back of your knee, so they don't pinch.

Important Sizing Tips

  • Check the Brand's Size Chart: Sizing is not universal. Always consult the specific size guide provided by the manufacturer for the chaps you are interested in.
  • Snug, Not Tight: For both full and half chaps, a snug fit is ideal. They should feel like a second skin, but not so tight that they restrict your blood flow or movement.
  • Don't Guess: Measuring with the proper pants and footwear on is a non-negotiable step. It ensures your measurements are as accurate as possible.

A well-fitted pair of chaps will feel like a custom-made piece of equipment, providing the comfort and security you need for a better ride.
