How to Measure: Dog Beds

A dog bed is more than just a place for your pet to sleep; it’s their own personal retreat—a spot where they can feel safe, secure, and comfortable. To make sure you choose the perfect bed, getting the right size is the most important step. A bed that's too small won't provide the support your dog needs, and one that's too big can take up valuable space in your home.

Here is a simple guide to help you measure for a dog bed.

What You'll Need:

  • A tape measure or a yardstick
  • A pen and paper
  • Your dog (of course!)

Step 1: Measure Your Dog

This is the most critical step. The best way to get an accurate measurement is to measure your dog while they are sleeping in their favorite position.

  • For the Stretcher: If your dog loves to sprawl out, measure them from the tip of their nose to the base of their tail. Be sure to add a few inches for extra room and comfort.
  • For the Curler: If your dog prefers to curl up into a ball, measure the diameter of their body when they are in this position.
  • Height: For a more complete picture, you can also measure your dog's height from the ground to the top of their shoulder.

Step 2: Measure Your Space

Before you buy, measure the area where you plan to place the bed. This is especially important if you have a specific spot in mind, like a corner of the living room, a crate, or a small alcove.

  • Dimensions: Measure the length and width of the space.
  • Important: Remember to check both the inner (sleeping area) and outer (overall) dimensions of the bed you're considering, as the outer dimensions will include any bolsters or raised edges.

Step 3: Consider Your Dog's Weight

While not a direct measurement, your dog's weight is a crucial factor. Most reputable dog bed brands provide a weight guide that can help you determine if the bed's padding and frame are sturdy enough to provide adequate support and durability. A bed for a 10-pound chihuahua will have very different support needs than a bed for a 100-pound Great Dane.

Step 4: Check the Sizing Chart

Once you have your dog's measurements and the dimensions of your space, it's time to check the product's sizing chart.

  • No Universal Standard: There is no universal dog bed sizing standard. A "Large" from one brand might be a "Medium" from another. Always check the specific measurements (in inches or centimeters) on the brand's chart.
  • Look for Details: Pay attention to the type of bed (e.g., orthopedic, plush, bolster) and the materials, as these can affect the overall fit and comfort.

Important Tips for Sizing

  • Consult the Brand's Size Chart: Every brand has its own specific sizing chart, and it’s important to refer to it. A size 8 from Ariat may not fit the same as a size 8 from Justin.
  • The "Heel Slip": When trying on a new pair of Western boots, a slight amount of "heel slip" is normal. The heel will slip up to about half an inch as you walk. This will disappear once the sole and leather break in and conform to your foot.
  • Consider Your Socks: Always measure with the socks you plan to wear. If you wear thick socks, they can add a half size or more to your measurement.
  • Break-In Time: Western boots are known for their break-in period. Be patient! The leather will soften and form to your foot over time.

By taking these measurements and keeping these tips in mind, you can confidently order a pair of Western boots that will provide comfort and last for years to come.
