How to Measure Tall Boots
Finding the perfect fit for your tall equine boots is essential for comfort, performance, and a polished look in the saddle. Follow this simple guide to ensure you get the right measurements for your new boots.
Before You Begin: What You'll Need
- A soft, flexible measuring tape (cloth or vinyl).
- A flat, straight-backed chair.
- The breeches and socks you plan to wear with your boots.
- A friend to help you take the most accurate measurements. (This is highly recommended!)
- A piece of paper and a pen to write down your measurements.

Step-by-Step Measuring Instructions
Step 1: Get Dressed
Put on the breeches and socks you will typically wear when riding. This is crucial as the thickness of your clothing will affect the final fit.

Step 2: Sit Down
Sit on a flat, straight-backed chair with your feet flat on the floor and your knees bent at a 90-degree angle. Keep your leg straight and relaxed.

Step 3: Measure Your Calf Circumference
Have your helper measure the circumference of your calf at the widest part. It's helpful to move the tape measure up and down a little to find the exact widest point.
- Pro Tip: Your calves may be slightly different sizes. Be sure to measure both legs and use the larger measurement when selecting your size.
- Important: Do not add any extra space. The leather will stretch and mold to your leg over time. A new boot should be very snug—so snug it might be difficult to zip the first few times. If the boot is too loose, it will sag and wrinkle, which can be uncomfortable and affect your riding.

Step 4: Measure Your Calf Height
While still seated with your feet flat on the floor, have your helper measure from the bottom of your heel (where it meets the floor) up the back of your leg to the crease behind your knee.
- Important: Do not be afraid to measure fully into the crease. Tall boots are designed to "drop" (or settle) at the ankle as they break in. This can result in a height drop of 1 to 2 inches, depending on the boot style and leather. We have already accounted for this drop in our sizing chart, so there is no need to add any extra inches to your measurement.

Step 5: Determine Your Foot Size
Your boot size is typically your regular shoe size. If you are in between sizes, consult our brand-specific sizing chart. Some brands run larger or smaller, and a conversion chart may be helpful if they use European sizing.
How to Use Our Sizing Chart
- Find your regular foot/shoe size in the first column.
- Follow that row across to find the calf measurements that match your height and calf circumference.
- If your measurements fall between two sizes, consider your personal preference. For a very snug, show-ring fit, you may choose to size down in the calf. For more comfort or if your weight fluctuates, you may want to size up.
What to Expect with a New Pair of Boots
- Initial Tightness: Your new boots will feel very tight, especially around the calf. This is normal! They are designed to stretch and mold to your leg as you break them in.
- Pinching: You may feel some uncomfortable pinching or rubbing behind the knee when you first wear them. This is a good sign that the boots are tall enough to "drop" to the correct height. This feeling will go away as the boot breaks in and softens. Heel lifts can be used to alleviate this discomfort during the break-in process.
- Zipping Up: Don't be surprised if you have a hard time zipping your boots all the way up. You may need a friend to help you. Once zipped, you should feel a comfortable pressure, not a painful one.
By following these simple steps, you can confidently choose the right size and look forward to a comfortable, custom-like fit in your new boots!
